Sarah has been in the operating room since 9:30 am, with surgery beginning about 10:30. We had a message from the OR at 2:30 saying the surgery was going well and that placement of the mitral valve was about to begin. With that procedure, then closing of her heart, then re-anastomosis of the blood vessels, then coming off of bypass (the transition from a machine circulating her blood to her heart circulating her blood), then finally closing her chest wall and skin, we expect it will be after 6:30 before they are done. Carl, Eliza and I have set up this blog page (studying options and opting for the most straight forward), written a few emails to friends and family, shared reminiscences, walked the hallways of the medical center to relieve anxiety, laughed, cried, and now sit waiting and wondering.
Sarah was in generally good spirits before the surgery, with her main pre-op problem being irritation that she couldn't have her usual diet coke with caffeine. "I need my caffeine!" This turned into a comedy of vows. She made each of us promise that we would not have caffeine again until she had her first sip of diet coke. (Fortunately I had finished my third and final cup of coffee, and Eliza and Carl their somewhat lesser quotients). If we break our vows, we must pay specific penalities: Eliza will be Sarah's maid and personal spa attendant forever. Carl will be her chauffeur. I will cook romantic dinners with candlelight for her and Levi whenever they want them. Ah Sarah, your will is strong!
The beeper we have been given to notify us of news from the OR just went off and I jumped a mile. Carl walked down to hear the milestone and report back to Eliza and me. More later.
